In the following illustration, try to determine which child best describes your struggling student. A mother told her three children that the stove was very hot and they should not touch the stove or they would be burned. The first child simply heeded his mother’s words and did not touch the stove. The second child was now intrigued by the stove and doubted that he would be burned. After all, how would he know that he would be burned unless he touched the stove himself? So of course, the second child touched the stove and began screaming out in pain.

The third child saw the reaction of his older sibling and decided that he would not touch the stove. In the above illustration, each child did learn that the hot stove would burn, but each learned in a different way. Which child most resembles your student? If your student is more like child number one, then he is an auditory learner. He learns or retains information best when he hears something, whether it be by lecture or by verbal instruction. If your student is more like child number two, then he is a kinesthetic learner He learns or retains information best when he is able to do some- thing hands—on like science projects, educational games, etc. If your student is more like child number three, then he is a visual learner. He learns or retains information best when he is able to see some- thing such as an illustration written on the board or other type of visual.

Though children may learn differently, they are not limited to one type of learning. Auditory learners can learn visually as well as kinesthetically, but he will retain more via what he has heard. As teachers, it is our job to combine these teaching styles to reach each type of learner. We have to remember that each of our students learn a bit differently. If it worked for one student, that does not necessarily mean it will work for all.
